Blasphemy
|
Greek Word: blasphemeo
to speak evil of, to slander
Blasphemeo occurs when a person rejects the truth of God that is spoken or shown to him. Generally, one cannot blaspheme apart from having heard or seen the truth.
There's one type of blasphemy about which Jesus gave a very serious warning:
"And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." Luke 12:10
Why is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit unpardonable?
Because the Spirit's job among unbelievers is to convict them of the truth about sin, judgment, and the escape from judgment through the righteousness of Jesus (John 15: 7-11). If an unbeliever's response to this truth is to say: "No...not so!...you lie!", then he has committed the one sin for which there is no forgiveness. In other words, he has rejected the key to God's gift of eternal life and he will
die in his sins for which Jesus has already paid the price.
God is at peace with sinners, but that peace is only in Christ...Outside of Christ wrath abides...Repent and believe today!
