Called and Chosen
The greek words are: kletos and eklektos.
![]()
Kletos translated in the KJV 11 times as called. From the root word kaleo (to call by name, to invite, to utter in a loud voice)
Eklektos is translated in the KJV 16 times as elect and seven times as chosen. From the root words, ek (common greek preposition translated: of, out of or from) and lego (called, directed , commanded or named).
For many are called (kletos), but few are chosen (eklektos). Matt.22:14
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called (kletos), and chosen (eklektos), and faithful. Rev. 17:14
In John chapter 11 we see an illustration of "calling" and "choosing" in the raising of Lazarus:
"When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, 'Lazarus [the calling by name, invitation, or "gospel call"], come forth.' [the electing, calling out or, naming out] The man who had died was called and came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. [when a sinner receives the gospel call and is called out to eternal life, the signs of our past 'deadness' yet are clinging to us] Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.' " [Believers are commanded of the Lord to serve other believers and to help them forget what is behind and walk in newness of life] John 11:43-44
