"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Matt. 16:19

Five observations about what the Bible says about the Keys to the Kingdom:

  1. In terms of earthly kingdoms, keys to the kingdom have to do with access to kingdom riches (Isaiah 22:22), which is symbolic of knowledge (i.e. the riches of God's word) of the kingdom of heaven (Luke 11:52)
  2. Keys to the kingdom convey authority granted by God to the king who then passes along that authority to his servants (Isaiah 22:22, Matt. 16:19, Matt 28:18)
  3. When the servants of the king operate the keys to the kingdom of heaven, there is a corresponding loosing and binding, or opening and shutting,  in heaven (Matt 16:19, Rev 3:7)
  4. The opening and shutting of the keys to the kingdom of heaven refer to being released (or not released) from hell and death through the resurrection of Christ (Rev 1:18)
  5. Authority to operate the keys to the kingdom of heaven were given not only to Peter but to all the disciples (Matt.28:19) and beyond them to all who would heed their teaching (Matt.28:20)

The Kingdom Key Card
The keys to the kingdom of heaven operate like a hotel room door with a guest inside and a man outside holding a key card. If the key card is inserted into the slot by the man and rejected, a red light appears and the door remains shut. But if the information on the key card is received and accepted, a green light appears and the door flies opened as the room becomes awash in light and life.

Information on the Kingdom Key Card:

1) All men are born sinners, separated from God and under His curse and impending final judgment

2) Jesus hung in our guilty place on Calvary's cross and suffered the judgment for our sins.

3) After three days, Jesus rose from the dead and soon after ascended to heaven. In so doing, he became for us a way of escape from eternal death judgment to eternal life in heaven.

4) There is nothing we can do to save ourselves from the spiritual death grip of our sin in a perishing world. God has done it all for us. All we do is a matter of the heart in response to the gospel---we must only turn to Jesus and receive God's free offer of forgiveness and eternal life by faith---there is no other way.
